About The Club/Team/Org
About Our Club/Team/Organisation:
Sheffield Boxing Centre is run by the former Lightweight Boxer - Glyn Rhodes.
Read Glyn's biography:
I was born in Sheffield in Attercliffe on Newhall Road
,
I moved to Firth Park and spent my early days at Huckalow Road infant/junior school. I was an only child and lived with my grandparents.
At 11 years old I moved to Firth Park secondry school and looking back people will tell you and I must admit it myself that I wasn't a very nice person as a kid. ( ha ha your still not ) that's from my misses.
I'm not proud to say it now but I caused a few people and my teachers nightmares. I left school at 16 with no qualifications or nothing and was unemployed straight away.
The best move I ever made (Next to meeting my Misses) was walking in to Brendan Ingles gym at 16 years old and there I stayed until I was 33 years old.
I had about 30 amateur fights didn't win much in the amateurs and turned pro at 19 with Brendan as my manager/trainer.
I went on to have 65 professional fights and if you look at my record you can see that I boxed all over the place. France twice
,
Italy twice
,
Ireland twice
,
Portugal and Switzerland. I never won abroad but I got a chance to travel to places I would never have gone if I had stayed hanging around the street corners getting in trouble with my mates.
Through boxing
,
I also got a chance to meet people I would never have had the chance to meet.
I retired in 1993 and have never looked back since.
I got my trainers license in 1994
,
then my managers license and eventually my promotors license.
I've been lucky enough to have trained kids who have boxed for area titles. The first kid I trained for a British title was Richie Wenton from Liverpool. I also travelled to Italy with Richie to fight for the European title
,
then to Atlantic city to fight for the world title against the great Marco Antonio Barrera.
Along the way I've also trained many more great kids
,
but the most professional kid I ever trained was Herol "Bomber" Graham. I'm the same age as Herol and spent many years in Brendan's gym with Herol (I almost put
,
trained with Herol but
,
everyone who knows me knows I never trained
,
I was a mug) also boxing on the undercard to probably the greatest fighter from England never to win a world title.
Herol's last fight was for the I.B.F world title against Charlse Brewer this fight took place in Atlantic city on the undercard to Lennox Lewis vs Shannon Briggs for the W.B.C Heavyweight title and for me it was a great opportunity to be in the same gym as Lennox Lewis and Manny Steward in Miami.
I've been at my Burton Street premises for 13 years and have had some great times here
,
it's the home of the hit movie "The Full- Monty" (Burton Street School
,
Sheffield). We have had so many great people come to the gym from H.R.H Prince Charles to famous footballers
,
but best of all
,
some great old boxers like Jake Lamotta.
One of the best was "Hands of Stone"
,
Roberto Duran who climbed into the ring and taught some of our young kids how to do it - those are great pictures.
At the moment
,
we have a great amateur team of boxers
,
these are taken care of by ex pro Simon Chambers.
