About Our Club
About Our Club:
Croquet is a fascinating sport, suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Croquet games range from the highly skilled Association Croquet, often likened to “snooker on grass”, to Golf Croquet, which although much simpler, requires skill, accuracy and some low cunning!

You can play as seriously, or as casually, as you like - the Club is big enough to cater for all! Although there is an emphasis on playing for fun the club also organises a number of tournaments and competitions throughout the year, which all members are welcome to enter.

For a low annual membership we provide three lawns in an incomparable setting and all the equipment necessary to play this fascinating game. With over 50 members you will always find plenty of people willing to give you a game!

Club Sessions are as follows:
Monday 10:30am - 12:30pm
Tuesday 6pm - dusk
Wednesday 2pm - 5pm
Thursday 2pm - dusk
Saturday 2pm - 5pm

At these times there will always be people around looking for a game; club members can also play at any other time.

In addition we run several tournaments and a variety of competitions throughout the year, catering for players of all abilities. We also run a week-long tournament at Fettes College every August, the only one in Scotland, with several different events, again catering for all abilities.

The Club is a member of the Scottish Croquet Association (SCA) and Club members have individual affiliate membership of the SCA entitling them to compete in all SCA competitions and tournaments, at reduced rates in some cases.

Edinburgh Croquet Club plays in the magnificent grounds of Lauriston Castle in Davidson’s Mains. There is free car parking in the grounds, and the castle is also easily accessible by bus.

If you’ve never played before, making a start is inexpensive compared with most sports.

You can join us for our annual beginners’ coaching course which runs from mid-May for six weeks on Saturday mornings. It covers the basic rules, skills and tactics of both Golf Croquet and Association Croquet. All equipment is provided, though participants are asked to wear flat-soled shoes to avoid damage to the lawns.

The charge for the course is £20 per person, which is deducted from your annual subscription should you decide to join the club at the end of the course.

All participants on the course, whether they join the Club or not, are also entitled to come along free of charge to the informal Thursday evening coaching sessions which run from mid-May until the end of August. These sessions are also available to you even if you are unable to attend the full coaching course, at a cost of £2 per session.

You don't have to register in advance, but it helps us plan if you do. Payment is taken at your first session, so even if you register now, that does not commit you to attend. If you would like to register you can do so online via our website (www.edinburghcroquetclub.com/trycroquet.html)

Alternatively, we are more than happy to arrange an evening of croquet for your club or organisation. The Club will provide croquet equipment and a number of members will be on hand throughout to instruct and guide participants both on the rules of the game and on mallet technique! All that we ask is that flat soled shoes are worn. The club will charge a fee for the evening, this can be a fee per person or a flat fee for the evening, and the appropriate fee for your club will be discussed on application.

The exact content of each session can be adapted according to the requirements of the group, but in general the evening will include a brief (10-minute) introduction to the rules and basic techniques of Golf Croquet, followed by a number of games. Up to 32 people can be catered for and we would generally advise that only those over 16 are suited to play, although with correct supervision from your organisation it is possible to include younger participants.

If you would like to organise such an evening you can do so online via our website. (www.edinburghcroquetclub.com/trycroquet.html)
